Sixteen miles up the 101 from Santa Maria to Arroyo Grande
Arroyo Grande is 16 miles from the center of Santa Maria by road, approximate, and nearly all of the run is US 101: north across the Santa Maria River into San Luis Obispo County and through Nipomo to Arroyo Grande's exits, 186 through 188.

- Exit 187A - Grand Avenue and Highway 227 north
- Exit 187B - Brisco Road northbound, Halcyon Road southbound
- Exit 188 - Oak Park Road
Two of those exits change names with the direction of travel, so give us the exit number and whether you were headed north or south. The driver then comes in on your side of the median instead of passing you on the other.

Grand Avenue, the Village and the 101 through the Five Cities
Arroyo Grande is one of the Five Cities, with Grover Beach, Pismo Beach, Oceano and Shell Beach. Its stretch of the 101 is outside both of San Luis Obispo County's Freeway Service Patrol beats. San Luis Obispo County's South County patrol covers the freeway from Los Osos Valley Road in San Luis Obispo down to the North 4th Street interchange in Pismo Beach, weekdays at peak commute hours only, stopping one exit north of Oak Park Road. Exit 187A puts you on Grand Avenue at the start of Highway 227, which runs east on Branch Street through the Village, Arroyo Grande's historic downtown, then north into rolling hills toward Edna and San Luis Obispo. Past the Village, Huasna Road turns off and becomes Lopez Drive, the road out to Lopez Lake Recreation Area at 6800 Lopez Drive; out there, give us the nearest campground, gate or landmark.
Traffic Way, reached from exit 186 northbound, crosses Arroyo Grande Creek just east of the freeway. The city closed it in May 2025 to replace the 1932 bridge and reopened it in December 2025; about 11,000 vehicles a day use it, linking the Village with the southwest part of town and Arroyo Grande High School.
West of the freeway, the dunes' beach entrances for street-legal vehicles are at the end of Grand Avenue in Grover Beach and the end of Pier Avenue in Oceano. A pickup buried to the axle down there gets a winch-out we bring to the beach entrances, with our truck on firm ground and the line doing the pulling.
Arroyo Grande police, the CHP, and getting a towed car back
Arroyo Grande is an incorporated city, 18,441 people at the 2020 Census, with its own police department. A tow the police order on a city street comes from the Arroyo Grande Police Department, not a county agency and not Santa Maria's.
The freeway is the CHP's. Its San Luis Obispo Area covers US 101 from the Santa Barbara County line north to Highway 58, from an office at 675 California Boulevard in San Luis Obispo, open weekdays 8 to 5. A car the CHP had moved off the 101 after a crash or a long stop on the shoulder is that office's question, not the city's.
