Santa Maria Tow Truck picks up at 2 a.m. the way we pick up at 2 p.m.: where are you, what are you driving, what happened, and a truck is assigned before the call ends. The rest of our work is under towing in Santa Maria; this page is the calls that cannot wait for daylight.

On the freeway, give the road, the direction and the last exit you passed - 101 northbound past Betteravia, exit 169, say; on a street, the cross street. The exit keeps the driver from passing you on the wrong side of a divided highway.

What we ask, in order

• Where the vehicle is - freeway, direction and exit, or street and cross street.
• What you are driving - year, make and model; all-wheel drive, electric or a motorcycle.
• What happened - will not start, quit running, a crash, a flat, stuck in sand.
• Where it should go - your driveway, your mechanic, a body shop or a dealership.

With those four answers we assign the truck, quote the total and give you the arrival window before you hang up. We do not promise minutes we cannot control; the driver calls when the truck is close. And no Freeway Service Patrol runs on US 101 through Santa Maria, Orcutt, Nipomo or Los Alamos: a driver stranded here has CHP and a private tow, nothing in between.

We quote the total on the call, midnight or noon, and the truck leaves after you say yes. The cost page covers what moves the price of an emergency tow in full; in short:

• Distance - truck to you, then to the destination; Nipomo to Betteravia is short, the Cuyama canyon is not.
• Time on scene - a car that rolls onto the bed beats one on dollies, and a winch pull out of sand or mud is its own line.
• The vehicle - a front-wheel-drive compact on a wheel-lift is the simplest job; all-wheel drive, electric, lowered or a motorcycle needs a flatbed.
• The destination - a closed shop's night box is quoted differently from a run home and a second tow in the morning.

We print no rates, because a rate that ignores the distance and the vehicle is a guess, and California sets no statewide dollar caps. Two kinds of tow are priced by rule instead. A tow CHP orders to clear a road is a rotation tow, at rates each operator submits to the CHP Area commander for approval; they are not published, so nobody can quote them. A tow off private property under Vehicle Code section 22658 may not exceed what that law-enforcement rate would have been.

Either way, section 22651.07 gets you an itemized invoice before you pay - dispatch, arrival and completion times, each charge on its own line, and who directed the tow - and ours reads the same way for a call that came from you.

The tow is a loading job. A wheel-lift slides a cradle under the drive wheels and tows the car on the other two. A flatbed tilts its bed to the pavement, winches the vehicle up and carries it with all four wheels off the ground. Both are light-duty trucks; if a job is beyond their tow rating - a loaded produce truck on the 166 - we say so on the phone.

Which truck we send

A front-wheel-drive sedan is a wheel-lift job. Anything all-wheel or four-wheel drive gets a flatbed, because lifting one axle and turning the other works the center differential or transfer case the wrong way: Subaru says never to tow its AWD models with one pair of wheels down. Electric cars get a flatbed too - Tesla tells transporters never to move a Model 3 with the tires where they can spin. So do low cars, motorcycles and anything with a wheel or frame bent in a crash: a flatbed for a vehicle that cannot roll.

Securing the vehicle

On a flatbed, wheel straps go over each tire and ratchet to the deck; where they cannot be used, soft straps go around a rated point and J-hooks into the frame slots, never around a control arm or a sway bar. A motorcycle rides in a wheel chock, strapped by the frame, never on its center stand. First the driver puts the transmission in neutral, releases the parking brake and unlocks the steering - which is why we ask for the key.

Belongings and impounds

Take your wallet, phone and medication out before the car is loaded. A car half in a lane is a police matter first: CHP can order off a vehicle that obstructs traffic or sits on the freeway more than four hours, and the truck that comes on their call may not be ours. Since January 1, 2026 California's Move Over law covers any stopped vehicle showing hazards, not only tow trucks with amber lights, but do not stand anywhere that counts on it.

Fog, flood and the long road east

The fog here is marine-layer stratus under an inversion, and it can sit for days. Nearly all the year's rain falls November through April, and when it comes hard the low roads flood first - Black Road, Telephone Road and a stretch of Highway 1 did in January 2023 - so do not drive through standing water. East of town the 166 runs 52 miles up the Cuyama River canyon to the next services at New Cuyama; break down out there and we need the last landmark you passed.

After a crash

If you can make decisions and the car is not blocking the road, you decide where it goes: your body shop, your driveway, the dealership. If CHP or the Santa Maria Police order the tow to clear the road, the car goes where the officer directs it. Get your belongings out before it is loaded either way.

When a tow is not the call

Some 2 a.m. calls do not need a tow. A car that clicks but will not crank on one of our few freezing mornings is usually the battery - AAA puts one about 30 percent weaker at 32°F - and a flat with a usable spare is a tire change; either is a jump start or tire change instead of a tow. A car that is stuck but not broken is a recovery: pulling a car out of the sand or off the shoulder is a winch line, a snatch block and a recovery strap. At Oceano Dunes the state park itself warns that tides, rain and blowing sand decide whether you get stuck.

Three places strand cars here at night: the freeway shoulder between Clark Avenue and the river; the field roads, where a farm pickup sinks to the axle after a winter rain; and the airport lot, where a car that sat two weeks while you were in Las Vegas may not turn over.

Past those towns - up the 101 beyond San Luis Obispo, down it beyond Buellton, or east on the 166 to New Cuyama, 54 miles and well over an hour each way - a tow becomes a long-distance transport, quoted by the mile.
